The Clackamas County District Attorney's Office has a message for shoplifters: If you're caught stealing from a store on our turf, you can and will be prosecuted.
The DA's Office is spreading the word by distributing hundreds of signs retailers can prominently display. The message is short and to the point: "Shoplifting is prosecuted in Clackamas County."
It's no idle threat.
In 2025 through early December, the District Attorney's Office charged 1447 cases that involved in Theft in the Second Degree or Theft in the Third Degree. These charges most frequently involve retail theft.
"Shoplifters steal from all of us. Retail theft harms business owners, drives up prices and offends the community. These signs send a message: My office is committed to aggressively prosecuting thieves," said District Attorney John Wentworth.
"Our mission is to make Clackamas County a safe and livable community," Wentworth said. "We'll take every step we can, large or small, to accomplish our mission."
Several major retailers in Clackamas County, including Walmart, Safeway, Fred Meyer and Macy's, have posted the signs, which were paid for with part of a grant from the Oregon Criminal Justice Commission
If you'd like one of the signs, call the DA's Office, 503-655-8431, and ask for the Property Supervisor or email Senior Deputy District Attorney Stacey Borgman, Staceybor@clackamas.us.
