OREGON – County clerks and judges around Oregon will celebrate Loving Day on Friday, June 12 by offering wedding ceremonies and recognizing the enduring importance of marriage equality and equal protection under the law.
Loving Day commemorates the 1967 United States Supreme Court decision in Loving v. Virginia, which struck down laws banning interracial marriage nationwide. The anniversary is recognized each year as a celebration of love, civil rights, and the freedom to marry.
Participating clerks and judges say the day serves as both a celebration and a reminder of the role public institutions play in ensuring equal access to civil services for all people.
“Performing marriage ceremonies is one of the most joyful parts of public service,” the group said in a joint statement. “Loving Day honors the principle that every couple deserves dignity, fairness, and equal treatment under the law. We are proud to celebrate that commitment with communities across Oregon.”
Many counties now regularly offer civil wedding ceremonies through clerk’s offices or local courts, expanding access for residents seeking simple, affordable ways to marry. On Friday, June 12, participating offices will host ceremonies, welcome couples, and commemorate the anniversary together.
Couples interested in participating should contact their local county clerk’s office or courthouse for ceremony availability, costs, scheduling information, and marriage license requirements.
