OREGON CITY, Or. -- Clackamas County Commissioners on Tuesday appointed Jane Vetto as county counsel following a nationwide search. Vetto replaces Stephen Madkour who has been the county’s legal counsel for 13 years and is retiring at the end of May.

The county counsel oversees all legal matters and is the primary legal officer for the Board of County Commissioners and county departments.

Vetto brings deep experience working in local government, most recently in Marion County, where she served as county counsel for the board of commissioners and provided legal advice on matters ranging from labor and contract negotiations to land-use matters.

“Jane brings an impressive legal portfolio to Clackamas County. Her experience and enthusiasm are what set her apart among a highly qualified pool of candidates. We are confident she will serve the county skillfully on all legal matters,” said Chair Tootie Smith.

Her career includes acting as a senior deputy prosecutor in the Civil Division for Clark County, defending counties in lawsuits, and arguing before a court of appeals regarding public record law. She has advised and provided training for departments and elected officials on legal matters.

“I am honored to be appointed Clackamas County counsel, said Vetto. “I appreciate the opportunity to contribute to a great team in a wonderful community.”

The county conducted a competitive nationwide recruitment and interviewed five finalists. Vetto starts her new role as county counsel on June 3, 2024.
