A U.S. government shutdown is currently in effect as of Wednesday October 1, 2025, but WIC food benefits are available for November and WIC is currently operating as normal. Please keep appointments and use benefits as you normally would. You will be updated further if the shutdown does affect WIC benefits and/or operations.
What is a government shutdown?
A government shutdown is when the U.S. Congress doesn’t pass laws that are needed to fund government agencies and operations. When a government shutdown happens, government services that Congress considers “non-essential” may sometimes stop because there is no money for them. The longest ever government shutdown lasted just over a month. Sometimes, they have only lasted a few hours.
How could WIC be affected by a government shutdown?
WIC is funded by the U.S. government. But WIC is currently operating as normal, and WIC benefits are available for November. We hope there will be no interruptions to benefits. Please keep appointments and use benefits as you normally would. If the government shutdown does affect WIC, we will keep clients updated about what that means for them.

Will my benefit card still work?
Your benefit card should be working as normal. If the government shutdown does affect WIC benefits, we will provide further updates. Text START to 503-655-8476 to make sure you are opted in to messages.
Can I still drop in to WIC locations if needed?
Our WIC locations will be open our regularly scheduled business hours by individual location. See “Our Locations” section for specifics.
Should I keep my appointments during a shutdown?
Yes! We need all families to keep all of their appointments so services can continue uninterrupted.
